I am not sure if an Imac4,1 has EFI at all, but it's definitely not 64 bit.
An isolinux boot Linux disc should work. Even EFI systems can still boot
old MBR-ish systems.
Can you please tell me which Linux images you have tried, and exactly
what showed up on the screen when you tried them? It should work, so I
maybe you just need a 32 bit isolinux boot. I'm not sure if Ubuntu is or
not, but I know Linux Mint is.
I'd be surprised if that debian-mac i386 disc Paul showed you doesn't boot
though.
