[kwlug-disc] Laptop no longer accepting seamless remote sessions

I have an Xubuntu 18.04 laptop that worked fine when I remote logged in to
it.
If there was a session active on it, remoting would use that session. If
there was
no active session, then it would prompt for the password and a new session
is
created, accessible over the LAN, or from the keyboard.

I was using NoMachine to do remote desktop, since VNC proved to be unusable
over WiFi.

Then things suddenly stopped working, after an upgrade a week or two ago.
If I was not logged in locally on the laptop, NoMachine can establish a
session, but it
is 'odd'. It did not have my custom wall paper and it would popup messages
about
authentication for various things (e.g. System policy prevents control of
network
connections).

If I was logged in locally, then I cannot establish a session (new or to
the existing one)
from NoMachine. NoMachine would just give me a black screen.
If I was not logged in locally, then I can establish a connection, but it
would not
be available on the laptop locally using the keyboard.

I installed xrdp on the laptop (RDP server), and I get the same black
screen if I had
a local session on the laptop.

So it is not NoMachine or RDP. It is a problem of local session takeover.
What can this be?
