Unfortunately I missed yesterday's meeting, so I don't fully understand
the context, but...
For email, mutt all the way, with supporting programs I wrote myself, and
a nice procmail recipe grown organically over the years.

irssi for irc stuff.
Mattermost is nice if you need team based work with saved conversations
and a good web client. We've used it in the flightgear project during
the hackathon, and it worked well.
Been trying out nheko on the matrix network for chat. I think this
is the future: chat, SMS replacement, phone and video replacement,
on a decentralized network.
