The FSF was founded in 1985, over 35 years ago. If the FSF board is
only now getting around to adopting "a transparent, formal process for
identifying candidates and appointing new board members", then previous
boards have ignored and/or abdicated their responsibilities for proper
governance.
Of course, as a de facto religious organization, dominated by a religious
zealot, some might not find it surprising that proper governance seems not
to have been a priority thus far.
