What a strange story. From what I can deduce from various sources, Andrew Lee is an antisocial geek who is acting out some fantasy from his teenage years by taking over freenode, which he likely accomplished by bribing a couple of top-level admins (he has a lot of money).

You don't want to be a channel operator on the Lee-controlled freenode. Here is a recent outrage committed by Lee:

The old freenode was open to this kind of abuse because of the informal nature of the organization, which was based on trusting people. The original freenode staff have mostly moved to a new organization, Libera.chat, which is a registered non-profit with a clear constitution and a democratic power structure, and a system of yearly 3rd party audits. This is a smart move.
