[kwlug-disc] Older PC not booting Linux ...

This is a long shot, but you might try booting from a 32 bit distro to
start. If this boots then there might be an obscure CPU-specific flag
you need to get these older Athlons booting with 64 bit Linux. This is
similar to William's suggestion.

You have gotten memtest working, which is a start. If you can get
anything else less trivial working then the issue is probably
configuration and not hardware. 

In my experience I have been able to get such machines (Athlon-era 64
bit) to boot. But I have not tried in a while.
