I feel your pain. I tried to review the "Poignant Guide", a few years 
ago and it was also over my twee-threshold.

It fell in to that category of: I understand other people will like this 
but it is not for me. :)


If you are still interested in giving Ruby a try, the official Ruby

* Learn Ruby the Hardway, is more exercise focused

The Ruby on Rails Guides are also pretty good for getting starting, just 
doing something with Ruby.

They don't teach you Ruby specifically, but if you went the "Getting 
Started with Rails" you are exposed to a bunch of Ruby patterns.
