All very true about Google's reputation for killing off products, and 
it's quite fair to be skeptical of their long term success in this area.


Even though they, themselves, developed the LLM (Large Language Model) 
that drives ChatGPT, Google sat on it and didn't release anything.

Part of that is valid, I think:

a) they wanted higher accuracy output since they have a reputation to uphold
b) a model that synthesizes results from a *good* search engine can 
reduce the advert clicks and even the click-throughs to destination 
sites hosting adverts. "Snippets" had that very effect, as did / does 
Google News.


For a), Microsoft doesn't quite have the reputation at stake, and are 
seen in search as a bit of a joke.

For b), this part is essential to Google and what has them scared.


All the wonky results ChatGPT puts out prior to its affiliation with 
Bing are supposedly not using any live search engine, so it's using 
whatever OpenAI gave it, or is simply "evaluating" on its own what it 
"thinks" is relevant.

Add a competent search engine, and I can see quite a bit of improvement 
in the near future.
