LinkedIn is definitely valuable. Countless people have told me that it was
directly responsible for getting them opportunities.
Provided you add enough details (more than the details you put on a
resume), it's essentially a place where employers and recruiters can find
suitable candidates for jobs quickly, and where you can find suitable jobs
to apply for quickly.
Of course, like any site, it's got some issues - there's the odd spammy
recruiter, connection request, or message. For example, these past 6 months
I've been getting tons of requests out-of-the-blue from people abroad
asking to be hired as a remote programming instructor. Each request is
worded perfectly and free of grammatical errors. But I asked one of them
(who listed every technology under the sun in his LinkedIn message) if he
knew KeruGL (which doesn't exist) the reply was "yes, I am expert in KeruGL
and can wage negotiation and start working immediately if opportunity."
