I have been casually lurking the internet looking for something like Ngrok https://github.com/rapiz1/rathole this might be the winner here if I understand the comparison without doing much digging you could ship a rathole client on the pio's and then have an official server then you get the joy of figuring out how to make that process non exploitable and set up the DNS in a way such that it captures say *.pio.ca and that * contains a letsencrypt wildcard cert for pio.ca and any pio that's trying to present itself through that can and anyone who wants to cname or the nonstandard aname dns hack can if their dns provider offers it.
