Glad you got in - I was going to suggest trying "su".

BTW, constructs like "sudo su -" and "sudo bash" may have had their
convenient place (more than a few) years ago, but these days, you
likely want

    sudo -s

The whole "sudo su -" trope confuses me - it's like someone tried
random things, something "worked", and the cargo cult took over.
