I also ditched PC speakers, but went to stereo speakers instead. Edifier R1280DB (If you look at amazon, check CamelCamelCamel, as I bought them for much less than the current price).

I went for them as they had optical-in, as well as line inputs so I can have my hifi connected to it (although in practice, I ended up buying separate speakers for the hifi).

I do use headphones if I was to play a game, and I'm less concerned with audio quality with those.
