So I don't understand ZorinOS. It seems to be yet-another Ubuntu-derved
distro, with a yet-another GNOME-forked. Except this one has a paid
version that unlocks extensions to make said GNOME-fork look like
Windows/Mac/etc?

Mint at least has enough history that, between just these two options,
I'd suggest it. It seems to offer Cinnamon (a GNOME fork), XFCE, and
Mate (a GNOME 2 fork).

That said, I don't know what you're actually getting vs just standard
Ubuntu nowdays. Ubuntu itself has GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon, XFCE, and Mate
(and more) versions already. Pick the one you like, and skip having a whole
third-party in the middle.

Note: I say this as a Fedora guy. I vastly prefer Fedora (which *also*
offers all those desktops, and more). But Ubuntu has the benefit of
higher popularity, so if you encounter issues you're more likely to get
direct results when searching.
