Yes, Canonical sucks in this regard.
But there is an easy solution:

You add the Mozilla Team repo, and install Firefox normally like any Debian
package.

The instructions on Mozilla Team's Firefox ESR page
<https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/ppa> has how to add the
repository.

I use the ESR version so I get less frequent updates, and less changes.
