Believe it ...

My experience with sound on Linux has been largely positive, and trouble
free.
Until the past few months that is ...

I got a new (to me) Lenovo laptop from 2019, and with headphones plugged in
(whether USB or 3.5mm) everything is fine.

But the built in speakers have low volume even if I crank the volume to
100%
from the panel, and in the application (Youtube or Clementine).

Separately, another N100 media PC defaults to the 3.5mm connected speakers,
although it is connected by HDMI to the TV. Trouble is, those external
speakers
are for Home Assistant (which runs on the same PC). The annoying part is
that
clicking on the speaker icon in the panel sometimes allows you to switch
devices
and sometimes does not list both devices.

It takes several tries of logging out and in for the devices to show, then
we can a) adjust the volume on the external 3.5mm speakers, and b) switch
to HDMI output so sound comes out of the TV ...

Very annoying ...
