Pi4 supports booting from USB media, though you may need to update the 
bootloader in the EEPROM if you have an older Pi4.

I used to use a MicroSD card with the pftf UEFI firmware on it, which 
would then boot a generic UEFI ARM system from a usb-attached ssd. 
Basically no writes to the SD Card, and I didn't need to use pi-specific 
OS images (I was using Fedora Server).

I don't really use Pis anymore, though. I've found it was simply a 
better deal to grab a used mini-pc from the surplus store. It uses a bit 
more power, but it's also 1000-times more capable.

(I've since gone a little overboard in the homelab area and no longer 
use the mini-pcs either, but maybe that's another discussion)
