To be sure, you must inspect the anode, to see how much of it is gone.
Perhaps every 2 years, maybe 3 depending on usage.

If you never change the anode, then it corrodes completely, like the
original one.
After that, the minerals in the water attach the tank itself, and it will
leak, and needs to be replaced.
That is why the magnesium rod is a sacrificial anode.
