Hello everyone,

My name is Matteo Golin and I'm looking into setting up an Apache Local
Community (ALC) chapter for the Kitchener-Waterloo region. I am a Project
Management Committee (PMC) member on the Apache NuttX RTOS project
<https://github.com/apache/nuttx>, and I just moved to Waterloo in
September to attend graduate school at UW.

I posted about this initially on Reddit
<https://www.reddit.com/r/waterloo/comments/1rbsbq4/apache_local_community_chapter_longshot/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button>
and was helpfully pointed to this mailing list by one of your members. I
think it's great that this community exists in KW and I'm looking forward
to attending some of your events!

An ALC chapter is essentially just a group affiliated with the Apache
Software Foundation (ASF) that is local to a city. The group would hold
meetings (similar to the KWLUG ones from what I see on your website) at
least every 3 months. Given that KWLUG exists, it might be possible to just
join forces with your larger group on such meetings (if permitted). In
order for the group to be officially recognized by the ASF, it must have
three members who are also members of the ASF and two who are PMC members
on an Apache project. You can read more about the rules here if you're
interested:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/COMDEV/Process+to+establish+an+ALC+Chapter

So far, there is myself (1/2 PMCs) and another Apache contributor who has
expressed interest in joining. I figured I would reach out here in case
anyone in KWLUG is also an ASF member. Even if you don't have an ASF
membership, I think we can make a petition to get recognized by the ASF
anyways as long as you're a contributor to some Apache project.

My goal is to have the KW chapter listed officially by the ASF to hopefully
grow the community a bit, and ideally to have some fun meetups (again,
maybe something that could be done alongside KWLUG given that your group
will likely be far more active/larger). Please let me know what you
think/if you're interested in participating in the ALC chapter!

Thank you, and glad to have discovered this community!
Matteo
