Based on experience from a few years ago:

Generally speaking, gas water heaters, including installation, are more 
expensive to purchase than electric water heaters.  On the other hand, the 
energy cost for gas is less than for electricity.

One hopes, for the sake of our planet, that the energy costs will reverse.

Electric water heaters should be more reliable but gas heaters aren't bad.

DON'T rent water heaters.  Scammy.
