I don't have a water softner, and my tank has lasted for 15 years. I've
done zero maintenance, but it probably helps that it gets effectively
completely cycled every day.
One of the guys doing quotes said that a softener is strongly
recommended due to the tight passages in the tankless units. He went as
far as to say that warranty may be denied based on not having one.
Which is yet another thing on my list to research, I guess.
