It doesn't matter how good a particular platform is technically if the people you want to connect with or follow are on different one. People who are leaving Twitter are mostly going to Mastodon not Hive Social, which I never heard of till you mentioned it. The network effect is an important factor. I joined Facebook because a relative posted pictures of a trip there. I wanted to switch to Google+ but everybody stayed on FB, so G+ failed. You have to go where everybody else goes if you want to connect to them.
