Does it?  Same argument could be made for the existence of the distros
themselves, yet Debian and others remain.

It used to be that there was an argument that open source software
took longer to develop because people could take their time and do
quality work without the pressures of commercial deadlines.  Now
we say that we can't be bothered to do quality work unless we get
paid?  Something doesn't compute.

I'm not against getting paid.  But the idea that you'll only get
half-assed work if it's done for free is obviously not true.
