I'm just going to toss a couple of ideas out there, as I used to have this
same issue repeatedly with Ubuntu. Based on my own experience, I have to
ask if you're using an Nvidia video card? The drivers for that are usually
the culprit.
Have a look here:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/black-screen-with-cursor-after-updating-kde-neon-to-plasma-6/11193
Also, if you can't login via Ctrl-F4 with your username, can you login as
root? (some distros, like Ubuntu, don't allow root login, but maybe your
distro will let you in). Also, sorry for asking, but are you saying that
you might not have the right password for your user?
If you have no hope of login via terminal, then you may have to do the
Secret SysAdmin Trick to reset the root or user password, as the case may
be. There are different ways to do that, but one that might work for you
can be found at
https://linuxconfig.org/recover-reset-forgotten-linux-root-password
Gain root login via grub, then reset either root or your user password as
necessary.
Ubuntu used to do this to me all the time. As I mentioned, the culprit is
the Nvidia drivers. I solved that problem by buying an not-Nvidia GPU.
And I switched to Debian instead of Ubuntu for various reasons.
