That includes reading the disk, and writing to the other disk.
Try dd if=/dev/zero on source laptop, and of=/dev/null on the destination.
I am guessing it will be faster.
Curious how you connected them directly?
Ethernet cable? In that case, you have to configure IP addresses, and
routing
manually.

Got a USB to Ethernet dongle from KW Surplus for $8.99.
Worked well.
