There are other things in the pipeline that will slow things down no matter
what.
That includes reading the disk, and writing to the other disk.

Try dd if=/dev/zero on source laptop, and of=/dev/null on the destination.
I am guessing it will be faster.

Curious how you connected them directly?
Ethernet cable? In that case, you have to configure IP addresses, and
routing
manually.

My new (to me) laptop is WiFi only.
Got a USB to Ethernet dongle from KW Surplus for $8.99.
Worked well.
