Thanks for all the suggestions.
Yes, adding the user to the audio group in /etc/group solved the absence
of audio devices.
And Anton is right: the first card does not play, but the second one does.
Using some old test .wav files that I had, they do play from the 3.5mm
stereo speakers.
$ aplay -D hw:1 test.wav
But when I use pico2wave or espeak, the output .wav file does not play.
The error is:
$ aplay -D hw:1,0 foo.wav
Playing WAVE 'foo.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 22050 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:1377: Channels count non available
A quick search says that because the generated .wav file is mono, and the
speakers
are stereo, there is this error.
The 3.5mm speaker on my Raspberry Pi4 didn't have that problem, because
they
are mono.
