[kwlug-disc] Recoverying old data

Thayen posted this to the list using a slightly incorrect address. It
is a legitimate question, though.

My advice: https://forensics.wiki/ddrescue/

Is the Win7 hard drive starting to fail? Then ddrescue is a great
choice. I have used it a few times with success, in much the same way
you have. Make sure the destination drive is in good shape and is
bigger than or equal to the source drive. Make sure you have the
recovery log. Make sure the drives are physically secure (not dangling
off the side of the computer so they can slip off).

Hey guys,

I'm a first time poster but tonight I'm hopefully going to be recovering some data from an old and unused windows 7 desktop (at least from 2014 or earlier). I'm a bit nervous to try this (what if the drive breaks, etc). I'm planning to take the HDD out and plug it into my modern desktop, copy the drive over with ddrescue and then work with that copy. Anyone have any tips or advice for this?
