Your question got me nostalgic for iGoogle, which was a customizable home
screen for Google with lots of widgets that you could arrange arbitrarily.
I don't know why Google got rid of it!

But there are some 3rd party clones that look pretty nifty. These are all
browser based:
 * https://igtab.com/
 * https://www.protopage.com/
 * https://www.symbaloo.com/

As for Nova Launcher, I've heard that Smart Launcher 6 is the one that most
people have migrated to, but there's also Hyperion, Niagara, Octopi,
Lawnchair
