I always pay cash at Canada Computers (as well as at every other franchise store). This would not be possible if they did not have cash registers.

That's true if you provide your credit card number to the vendor. Sticking your credit card into a reader exposes your credit card number.
If you insist on using a payment card, and you want better security, then use tap. Your card's identity is verified using a cryptographic protocol that does not expose the card number.
