For water softeners, I have had a very good experience with Water Depot in
Waterloo.
About 21 years ago, the Kenmore softener, which was in the house when we
moved in, burst and flooded the basement (unfinished, so no damage).
I had it replaced by Water Depot, and it lasted for 21 years.
Towards the end, it had diminished capacity (needed to be regenerated too
often).
Turns out that the resin needs to be replaced after ~ 10 years of service.
Also, there was a very thick layer of solid salt at the bottom which
reduced the amount of brine that is used in every regen cycle.
The old one could continue to work if the salt was removed (very tedious),
and the resin replaced.
But because of the age, I didn't want to risk a blown gasket or something
else going bad.
So I decided to replace it.
They had a deal on a top model for the price of a regular one, and offered
a small discount on top of that for a repeat customer.
Works like a charm.
