[kwlug-disc] Manual IP on Ethernet is unstable ...

Here is the backstory first ...

I got a cheap D-Link DIR-3040 A1 WiFi router, which is supported in OpenWRT
(per this entry <https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/d-link/d-link_dir-3040_a1>).
The page says that the flashing is through the GUI OEM method

But that didn't work. The error was "firmware upgrade error".

The almost identical DIR-3060 <https://openwrt.org/toh/d-link/dir-3060_a1>
uses a different method: D-Link Recovery GUI

So ... I should be able to just connect an Ethernet cable to my laptop, and
off I go ... right?
In Network Manager, I created an "Ethernet Manual" entry, and put
192.168.0.2 with 255.255.255.0, and no gateway.

But that does not work, because the connection does not stay up long enough
for the process to complete.
What is happening, I think, is NetworkManager detects something is wrong,
and times out, and tries to connect to the Auto Ethernet connection, which
fails, and so on.

I tried to do: systemctl stop NetworkManager, to prevent this from
happening, but that didn't help.

So here is the question: What can I do to get a stable manual rudimentary
connection on the Ethernet port?
