I can't speak for all recruiters, but I have seen cases (especially on
LinkedIn) where they are just building up their candidate count to impress
the employer (look!  we sorted through five thousand candidates to present
you with just this one!)

Remember that a recruiter gets paid by the employer, not by you (unless you
fell for one of those scams where they "guarantee" you a job if you pay
them in advance).
